zanskar lightening dockOne of America’s leading geothermal discovery company’s, Zanskar, secured two US Department of Energy awards last month, allowing for the advancement of geothermal discovery and production.

The projects address the opportunities across geothermal development, by using advanced techniques to expand the potential of a producing field and accelerating the confirmation of new geothermal discoveries.

Zanskar is one of the only two companies to secure awards in both project areas under both US DOE’s geothermal field-scale demonstrations and subsurface exploration and discovery initiatives.

Caril Hoiland, CEO of Zanskar, said, “Zanskar’s mission is to discover and unleash America’s hidden geothermal resources. These awards highlight the incredible geothermal possibility that is still out there, and will help expand what geothermal can deliver. We appreciate DOE’s support and are excited to work with our state and local stakeholders on the next steps.”

At Lightening Dock, the proposed project would explore how advanced drilling and enhanced geothermal techniques can complement the existing hydrothermal field. Zanskar would design, drill and stimulate a short horizontal injection well to support pressure within the producing reservoir while accessing additional heat in the surrounding rock.

The project would provide valuable information about how these technologies can maximise geothermal resources and built on existing infrastructure, both at Lightening Dock and across the global geothermal industry.

Joel Edwards, CTO of Zanskar, commented, “Both of these projects areas give us the opportunity to test approaches that can make geothermal discovery and development faster and achieve even greater scale. The DOE has and continues to be a terrific partner in helping advance the geothermal frontier.”
