Hexagon Energy has received a US Department of Energy award to accelerate the development of geothermal energy in Washington’s Wind River Valley.
The award will support Hexagon’s execution of a targeted drilling initiative to capture subsurface insights in the Wind River Valley with the aim of evaluating the high-potential sit for conventional hydrothermal and enhanced geothermal systems.
Drew Price, President and Chief Development Officer of Hexagon Energy, said, “Washington contains one of the most significant untapped geothermal resources in the US. This area has been the subject of study for decades, and we are honoured to be selected to further explore this resource with support from the Department of Energy.”
Adam Ventre, Vice President of Geothermal Development at Hexagon, commented, “For decades, geothermal in the Washington Cascades has been studied, but drilling a full-depth characterisation well has remained out of reach. This public-private partnership with the Department of Energy will help unlock the geothermal potential of the Cascades, and it comes at a pressing time. Washington has set ambitious climate goals for 2030, just as the Northwest is projected to face a resource adequacy gap of roughly 9GW. Firm, clean, around the clock power will be essential to meeting both.”
Through this funding, Hexagon, along with other recipients, will further explore prospective regions across the US for their ability to deliver clean, around-the-clock power.
