hell kitchen geothermalThe US geothermal developer Controlled Thermal Resources has announced its subsidiary, American Data Power, will deliver a utility-scale energy complex to support data centres, advanced manufacturing and critical digital infrastructure in the US.

The company will advance the Hell Kitchen’s development project located in Imperial Valley, California – one of the largest baseload initiatives in the states – as announced at the Baker Hughes Annual Meeting in Florence this month, following more than eight years of collaboration with the operator.

The complex will be designed to accommodate powered-site development precincts and target a power capacity factor over 95% in a bid to meet the continuous electricity demand of data centres while reducing emissions. Outlined in a Field Development Plan, the complex is expected to deliver up to 600MW of net power.

Rod Colwell, Chief Executive Officer at Controlled Thermal Resources, said, “Access to reliable baseload power has become a critical bottleneck for AI and hyperscale data infrastructure growth in the US. The Salton Sea geothermal field currently produces around 450MW of baseload power and has an estimated 2.5GW of untapped capacity – that is enough around-the-clock electricity to power an entire city.

“The strategic value of Hell’s Kitchen and the greater Salton Sea geothermal resource cannot be overestimated. It is a proven resource with a 40-year operating history that can be scaled rapidly to service near-term energy demand while helping to alleviate longer-term energy supply instability as alternative technologies and battery energy storage systems mature and scale to commercial capacity.”
