North Dakota recently passed a bill aimed at mandating a feasibility study on geothermal energy development in the state.

The study will partially evaluate techniques to generate geothermal energy through a complementary energy extraction method using abandoned oil wells. According to the bipartisan bill, the study includes an evaluation of North Dakota's geology and exploring the availability of resources and the ease with which geothermal energy can be produced within the state. Opportunities to support geothermal energy startups, including the promotion of economic growth and innovation will also be looked into.

Findings of the study will be presented at the 70th legislative assembly.
