DOD geothermal initiativesThe Department of Defense continues to lay the groundwork for the deployment of new geothermal technology across military installations to support increase power generation.

The initiative plans to de-risk geothermal developments and catalyse the construction of geothermal power plants across DoD installations as the risks of extreme weather, cyberattacks, power shortages and other issues continue to threaten the national grid.

The Defense Innovation Unit (DIU) has partnered with the US Air Force, Army, Navy and Marines for this initiative, as well as welcomed six geothermal developers onboard for this effort: Eavor, Fervo Energy, Greenfire Energy, Sage Geosystems, Teverra and Zanskar.

DIU is also collaborating with the Department of Energy Geothermal Technologies Office, the Department of the Interior, Geothermal Trade Associations, Utilities, and State Energy Office to support the progress across the industry.

Michael Callahan, DIU Senior Energy Advisor and Program Manager, said, “DIU has helped catalyse multiple geothermal initiatives at DoD installations via our existing Other Transaction Authority agreements with various geothermal industry partners. While there are challenges to solve and limited resources, we’re optimistic that collectively we’ll be able to overcome the hurdles to ultimately accelerate the speed and scale to deploy new geothermal energy technologies to support national security and baseload energy demand.”
