A new coalition, the Canadian Deep Geothermal Coalition, has been officially formed to propel Canada to the forefront of the global geothermal energy landscape.
This alliance consists of 23 organisations and companies from across the geothermal industry, united by a common goal: to drive the development and deployment of deep geothermal energy within Canada.
The formation of this coalition follows the Geothermal Accelerator Conference in Ottawa, hosted by the Cascade Institute. This event gathered leaders from various sectors, including industry, government, Indigenous groups, and civil society, all with a shared vision of making Canada a global leader in geothermal power. At the conclusion of the conference, the coalition released the Declaration of Intent, marking a formal commitment to advancing the geothermal energy sector.
Deep geothermal energy harnesses the Earth’s heat from beneath the surface, using advanced drilling techniques, often adapted from the oil and gas industry. This technology can provide a clean, secure, and sustainable energy source that is not reliant on weather conditions, making it a reliable and baseload power option. While traditional geothermal energy depends on naturally occurring hot-water reservoirs, deep geothermal systems have the potential to generate energy anywhere across Canada, unlocking vast new sources of clean energy.
The coalition has committed to presenting a Deep Geothermal Roadmap at the World Geothermal Congress in 2026, which will outline the necessary steps to establish a competitive geothermal sector in Canada. Signatories have also called on both federal and provincial governments to collaborate in the development of this roadmap.
“Canada has built some of the most capable drilling, engineering, and project-delivery expertise in the world, and that expertise is already being leveraged to drive geothermal innovation,” said Jeanine Vany, co-founder and EVP Corporate Affairs at Eavor Technologies. “The Canadian Deep Geothermal Coalition seeks to deliver on Canada’s strengths, putting forward a vision for technology development and commercial applications, both domestically and abroad, that can advance energy security and prosperity for all Canadians.”
Thomas Homer-Dixon, Executive Director at the Cascade Institute, added, “Deep geothermal power could serve as the backbone of Canada’s future energy mix. No other technology is better positioned to deliver on the Prime Minister’s commitment to make Canada a clean and conventional energy superpower.”
With a comprehensive strategy in place, the Canadian Deep Geothermal Coalition is setting the stage for a greener, more secure energy future for the country.
