Stadtwerke München (SWM) and Energiewende Garching (EWG) has begun preparations for geophysical surveys in the greater Munich area, encompassing a distance of approximately 1,100km2, nine districts and over 60 municipalities.
The goal is to collect subsurface data using 3D seismic surveys to advance the development of large-scale deep geothermal energy and utilise previously untapped potential lying underground.
This campaign forms part of the GIGA-M research project, a large-scale integrated analysis of deep geothermal potential and its use, which has been coordinated by the Technical University of Munich and funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy.
The 3D measurements are recorded using vibrotrucks that transmit sound waves into the subsurface, where the reflected signals are recorded by geophones and then evaluated.
The planned start for on-site measurements is scheduled for Q1 2026.
