Whakatane geothermal explorationA geothermal exploration initiative in Whakatᾱne, led by the University of Auckland, has secured $3mn from the Government’s Regional Infrastructure Fund for the drilling of exploratory temperature-gradient wells to better understand the resources lying within the area.

Temperature-gradient wells measure the underground temperatures and geological conditions of an area to provide the necessary data to determine the viability of future geothermal heating projects.

Leading the project is the University’s Geothermal Institute, with Associate Professor, Dr. John O’Sullivan, taking the reins.

“Geothermal heat is one of New Zealand’s most reliable energy resources. Projects like this help communities understand what resources exist beneath the ground so that informed decisions can be made about how they might be used in the future.

“Our next priority is engaging with local stakeholders, including landowners, iwi and community leaders, to discuss how this work can be undertaken in a way that reflects local priorities and values.”
