PT Pertamina Geothermal Energy Tbk (PGE) has affirmed its strategic move beyond electricity by launching the Ulubelu Green Hydrogen Pilot Project, forming a critical part of the company’s efforts to build and end-to-end green hydrogen ecosystem in Indonesia.
PGE President Director, Julfi Hadi, said, “This ground-breaking [project] is the first step for PGE to build an integrated green business chain from upstream to downstream. This facility is not only an innovation centre but also a model that can be replicated in other geothermal working areas, while also opening up opportunities to accelerate off-grid solutions for transportation and low-carbon industries.”
Hadi emphasised the technology will be adopted in various PGE Geothermal Working Areas in the future. The initiative is supported by various parties, including the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, and the Ministry of Investment and Downstream Development.
The Ulubela Green Hydrogen Pilot Project utilises a combination of geothermal energy and energy-efficient electrolysis technology. The facility is designed to produce up to 100kg of green hydrogen per day with a high efficiency rate of 82-88%.
Alongside being a production facility, the project will also function as a centre for technological learning, commercial feasibility testing and market studies to map the future of potential demand.
