Indonesia’s geothermal landscape is set to sizzle as PT Barito Renewables Energy Tbk (BREN) ramps up the heat in its renewable energy arsenal.
Backed by seasoned conglomerate Prajogo Pangestu, BREN is charting an ambitious path to extend its footprint across the archipelago with fresh capacity and deeper reach into sustainable power.
At the heart of the company’s strategy is the expansion of its geothermal power portfolio through its subsidiary Star Energy Geothermal, a major player in Indonesia’s green-energy space. Star Energy currently boasts an installed capacity of 910 MW across three operational sites and two green-field assets, with potential to surge to 1.43 GW - an indication of the seismic shift underway in the geothermal industry.
BREN is unlocking this latent power via four major projects. First, two green-field developments: the Unit 3 addition at the Wayang Windu geothermal site, which will add 30 MW, and the Unit 7 expansion at the Salak geothermal site, contributing a further 40 MW. Both are slated for completion in the fourth quarter of 2026. On the retrofit front, the existing units at Wayang Windu (Units 1 & 2) will increase their output by 18.4 MW with a target date of Q4 2025, while the Darajat geothermal site Unit 3 retrofit adds roughly 7 MW, aiming for completion in 2026.
This strategic injection of capacity arrives at a fortuitous moment for BREN. The company recorded a net profit attributable to its parent of US$106.55mn as of Q3 2025—a 23.8 per cent leap year-on-year from US$86.06mn the prior year. Revenue for the same period reached US$457.39 million, up 3.6 per cent from US$441.29mn in Q3 2024.
Beyond its financials, BREN’s geothermal push aligns with global tailwinds favouring clean power. To underline the market’s confidence, BREN’s shares were recently included in the MSCI Inc. Global Standard Indexes a milestone signifying enhanced visibility and investor appeal.
BREN isn’t simply navigating the geothermal industry it’s actively rewriting the playbook. With planned expansions, robust existing operations and industry-timed momentum, the company is establishing itself as a formidable force in Indonesia’s transition to the geothermal era.
