Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham recently announced a groundbreaking partnership between XGS Energy and Meta to develop 150MW of advanced geothermal energy in New Mexico.
This collaboration aims to harness next-generation technology to produce clean, reliable energy, create high-quality jobs, and meet the state’s growing electricity needs with minimal water usage.
New Mexico is already a leader in clean energy, and this agreement positions the state at the forefront of the geothermal energy revolution. The project will employ XGS Energy’s innovative technology to generate geothermal power without using operational water—a critical advantage in an arid state like New Mexico. The energy produced will be used to power Meta’s data centers in the state and integrated into the PNM electric grid. This initiative could potentially increase the state’s geothermal capacity tenfold, tapping into a largely untapped resource beneath the Earth’s surface.
Josh Prueher, CEO of XGS Energy, highlighted the significance of this project, saying, “We’re pleased to support Meta’s ambitious AI objectives and accelerate access to new round-the-clock power supplies.” He also emphasized the growing data center sector in New Mexico and the role of their technology in supplying clean, water-independent energy to meet demand.
Meta, a global leader in corporate clean energy purchasing, views geothermal energy as a key component of its sustainable future. Urvi Parekh, Meta’s Global Head of Energy, explained, “Advances in AI require continued energy to support infrastructure development.” She also pointed to the potential for next-generation geothermal technologies to power emerging technologies, including AI.
The project will unfold in two phases, with the first expected to launch on a smaller scale and the second phase reaching full capacity by 2030. Don Tarry, PNM President and CEO expressed strong support for the initiative, stating, “This project is a meaningful step toward meeting New Mexico’s clean energy goals and demonstrates the power of advanced technology to shape our energy future.”
The announcement aligns with a report, 'The Future of Geothermal in New Mexico' authored by Project InnerSpace, New Mexico Tech, and the New Mexico Bureau of Geology and Mineral Resources, which identifies over 160GW of untapped geothermal potential in the state.
