Non-for-profit organisation Project InnerSpace has launched a new effort to catalyse development of geothermal heating and power in the UK.
Currently, the UK could meet a third of its electricity demand, as well as a significant share of its heating demand, through geothermal energy as shown by an initial data analysis from Project InnerSpace’s GeoMap. According to the data, with proper policies and investments in place, geothermal power could grow to meet twice the current electricity consumption in the UK, and nearly all of its heat generation.
Industry leaders convened together in London this week to explore a path toward scaling geothermal energy across the UK. In response, InnerSpace will work to support the UK’s geothermal ecosystem, which also includes the publication of a comprehensive geothermal report and roadmap entitled ‘The Future of Geothermal in the United Kingdom’ in Q4 2025. The report will leverage UK-based subject matter experts and their expertise to examine the UK’s total geothermal potential and offer recommendations to overcome investment barriers, adopt policies to encourage geothermal development, and implement practical strategies to move the industry forward.
Jamie Beard, Executive Director of Project InnerSpac, said, “Focusing resources and effort on geothermal is an investment in the UK's future – from tackling climate change, reducing energy prices, and ensuring energy security, to empowering communities to drive sustainable growth across the UK. We are excited to support this powerhouse ecosystem as it works to turn potential into action."
