In an official letter addressed to the Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenković, the European Geothermal Energy Council (EGEC) commended Croatia’s leadership in geothermal energy, while outlining key steps to scale up development across the country and the European Union.
President of EGEC, Miklos Antics revealed that he was delighted to witness the Geothermal Investment Forum Croatia (GIFC 2025), during which the Prime Minister highlighted his robust commitment to accelerate geothermal development in Croatia. Antics also expressed his eagerness to support the geothermal field Zagreb in its journey to transition central heating systems to geothermal. Zagreb is capable of almost entirely decarbonising the city's district heating and cooling systems.
Antics supports the government's plans to drive the geothermal sector through additional targeted interventions and has recommended lighthouse projects in specific sectors, such as agriculture, tourism and central heating. In addition, he also emphasised the need for Prime Minister Plenković's leadership in Europe and his involvement in leadership discussions at the European Council from 20-21 March, that aim to improve Europe's competitiveness.
In his letter, he also urged the Prime Minister to invite Europe’s leaders to produce national strategies for geothermal and fast-track the Geothermal Action Plan that was called for by the energy ministers in December 2024.
